Designed specifically for medical imaging and aerospace applications, a new bonded tungsten material will replace lead shielding in applications aimed at protecting people and the environment from the undesirable effects of ionizing radiation.

The new material came about as a result of a collaboration between ExOne and their development partners, rp+m.

"3D printed bonded tungsten is a great solution for radiation shielding because the M-Flex can create complex shapes for these applications that would be difficult to create with conventional methods of manufacturing," said Rick Lucas, CTO of ExOne. "Our collaboration with rp+m demonstrates the power of ExOne's strategy in engaging customers in the early stages of the materials development process, yielding direct applications in new markets."

ExOne is a provider of 3D printing machines and printed products to industrial customers. The company collaborated with rapid prototype + manufacturing (rp+m) to create this latest option for fabrication and tooling.

ExOne and rp+m, working collaboratively, 3D printed products to create "bundled solutions for lead replacement in the medical imaging and aerospace markets."

"ExOne's M-Flex machine is unique because of its ability to use multiple types of material and the machine's fast print speeds," said Matt Hlavin, Chief Executive Officer of rp+m.

Lucas says ExOne's Material Applications Laboratory (ExMAL) is currently working to bring a variety of new materials to market, and those efforts are under various stages of development.

ExOne, a global provider of 3D printing machines and printed products to industrial customers, is primarily engaged in manufacturing and selling 3D printing machines and printing products to specification for its customers using its in-house 3D printing machines. ExOne also offers pre-production collaboration and prints products through Production Service Centers located in the United States, Germany and Japan.

ExOne's 3D printing machines are built at facilities in the United States and Germany, and the company supplies associated products such as consumables, replacement parts, services, training and technical support to clients.

rp+m is a provider of rapid prototyping, additive manufacturing, rapid manufacturing, 3D printing and scanning services. rp+m's staff are engaged in the design, fabrication and fine-tuning of prototypes. The company also creates end-use parts on demand via its digital manufacturing equipment.
