voxeljet AG, the German 3D printing leaders, have purchased all the outstanding shares of Propshop (Model Makers) Ltd, a Buckinghamshire, UK-based firm famous for creating props for films like The Dark Knight Rises and SkyFall.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
Propshop Ltd, which operates from the grounds of the famed Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, UK, was founded in 2002. Since then, the company has focused on building props for the entertainment industry and perhaps most critical for voxeljet, houses highly sophisticated and specialized 3D modeling and scanning facilities.
As a result of the deal, Propshop will be renamed voxeljet UK and become a wholly-owned subsidiary of the German parent company. Officials say Propshop will continue to support the film and entertainment industry and begin to focus on a growing consumer market for on-demand 3D printing services.
James Enright, the founder and chief executive of Propshop, will join the newly-formed company as managing director of voxeljet UK, and as vice president for the consumer market, he'll report directly to Voxeljet's board of directors.
"I am excited to be working with voxeljet and about the opportunities presented by industrial 3D printing techniques and capabilities in developing consumer products," said Enright. "Propshop has a vast archive of digital content, which can now be transformed into collectables and art objects, effectively supplying the expanding market for this type of product."
Dr. Ingo Ederer, chief executive officer of voxeljet, said he sees the value of the deal in the addition of Propshop's expertise and consumer products potential.
"Propshop's innovation, creativity, and advanced experience with our 3D printing technology has made it a leading provider of sophisticated and complex content to the entertainment industry," Ederer said. "These attributes and award-winning capabilities have presented Propshop with several new and very exciting consumer-related opportunities in the on-demand parts services market uniquely suited for large scale 3D printing production."
