Taulman Nylon 680 food and beverage compliant 3D printer filament

Materials developer Taulman 3D, in a cooperative effort with Graphene 3D Lab, operators of the Black Magic 3D website and makers of Conductive Graphene Filament, have announced the immediate availability of Taulman's new Nylon 680.

Nylon 680 is an FDA food and beverage contact complaint nylon specifically designed for FDM/FFF 3D printing. It has a consistent melt viscosity. Typical FDA nylons are prone to clumping, random gaps and poor layer-to-layer adhesion when extruded. Nylon 680 was developed to eliminate such problems, making the printing process as easy as printing many other polymers in use today.

Taulman's latest is also able to handle the high temperatures of boiling water, steam and dishwasher usage. Some nylons deteriorate to the point of being unusable under these conditions, but Nylon 680 only needs to be dried to return to use.

The new material allows non-destructive evaluation of printed parts on a light table. Checking internal fill and adhesion is commonly a destructive process, but Nylon 680 is transparent enough to enable visual inspection.

Nylon 680 filament is manufactured by being drawn (not extruded) underwater. The water is maintained and continually refreshed to have a pH of ~7.0-7.2 and an ORP greater than 600mv. After drawing, the material is down-spooled and delivered to Taulman's facility where each spool is checked, labeled and vacuum sealed.

Taulman Nylon 680 is available in 1.75mm and 2.85mm spools.

The following specifications are the result of printed test bars being placed in boiling water for 15 minutes, then forced-air dried for 12 hours at 15 percent humidity. Parts not placed in boiling water while have a higher tensile strength and lower elongation.
