Best Carbon Fiber Filament

Carbon fiber makes a plastic stiffer and less prone to warping. It does not make it stronger, and in bench tests filled filament sometimes tests weaker than the plain resin. Buy it for dimensional stability on a material that warps, and budget for hardened nozzles.

Top pick

Nylon-CF

Nylon-CF, because nylon warps and creeps more than any base material here and the fiber fixes exactly that. Buy carbon fiber for stiffness and dimensional stability, never for strength: it does not add any.

Most dimensionally accurate PC-CF · Best value ABS-CF · Outdoors ASA-CF

As cited in
# Material Base warping What the fiber changes Nozzle Strength gain Sanding Worth it
1 Nylon-CF the real case High Cuts warp and creep, the base material’s worst traits Hardened steel minimum None; stiffness only Mask; the dust is the exposure Yes
2 PC-CF most accurate High Cuts warp, improves dimensional accuracy Hardened steel minimum None; stiffness only Mask; the dust is the exposure Yes
3 ABS-CF best value High Cuts warp at a lower price than nylon or PC Hardened steel minimum None; stiffness only Mask; the dust is the exposure Yes
4 ASA-CF outdoors Moderate Cuts warp; the UV stability was already there Hardened steel minimum None; stiffness only Mask; the dust is the exposure Marginal
5 PETG-CF cosmetic Low Stiffness and a matte finish Hardened steel minimum None; stiffness only Mask; the dust is the exposure Marginal
6 PLA-CF a finish, not an upgrade Low A matte finish, essentially Hardened steel minimum None; stiffness only Mask; the dust is the exposure No
