Fab Review

Free options alongside paid assets; a free pack can still cost more time to adapt.

Our verdict

Fab is a useful starting point for game assets, especially for Unreal Engine projects. Its broad catalog and purchase-to-project routes save sourcing work, but each listing still needs a check for files, engine versions, license terms and seller support.

Epic Games’ Fab is worth considering when you need ready-made art, sound or tools for a game, especially if you work in Unreal Engine. Its strongest benefit is the combination of a broad catalog and ways to bring purchases into your projects. Its main drawback is that you still have to work out how much setup, fixing and seller support each purchase will need.

I recommend Fab for clearly documented assets that support your software. I’d pass on a promising-looking listing if the seller can’t confirm the files, compatibility or rights you need. A large marketplace can help you find options; it can’t make an unsuitable asset useful.

What Fab offers your project

Fab is Epic’s digital asset marketplace at fab.com, the successor to the Unreal Engine Marketplace and Sketchfab Store, and the home of Quixel Megascans. That history explains why you’ll find both Unreal-specific products and models intended for other creative software.

The catalog goes beyond individual 3D objects. You can buy environment packs, animated characters, materials, sound effects, music, visual effects and plugins—software add-ons that give your editor or game extra features. There are also game templates and ready-made gameplay systems.

That mix suits independent developers who need help outside their own specialty. You might make the gameplay yourself and buy scenery, or create the art and buy a tool that handles a repetitive task. Film and visualization artists can also use compatible models and materials.

The catch is that a shared storefront doesn’t mean shared compatibility. An Unreal gameplay system and a model supplied as an FBX file are very different purchases. Start with what your project needs to do, then narrow the catalog to the software and asset type that can do it.

Finding a Fab asset worth buying

Fab provides filters for formats, licenses, publishers, price and ratings, alongside categories and visual styles. Wishlists help you keep a shortlist. These are useful ways to narrow a search, though they don’t tell you whether the remaining products are well made.

Read the included formats before getting attached to the pictures. For example, PackDev’s “Gym / Furniture Package / 100+ variations” lists Unreal Engine and Unity formats. That gives buyers in either engine a reason to investigate. It doesn’t establish that both packages support your version or look identical after import.

Next, look for the details that affect your particular scene. A character needs an animation skeleton, often called a rig, if you want to pose or animate it. Check which animations come with it. For scenery, look for object counts, texture sizes, collision setup so players don’t walk through objects, and simpler models for distant views where needed.

Use the interactive 3D preview when a listing offers one. Rotating a model can reveal shapes that a carefully chosen still image hides. For animated assets, look for a video that shows the movements you actually need. Neither preview proves how the asset will perform on your target hardware.

Check what’s included in the download, too. Fab permits promotional scenes to show extras, provided the seller makes the exclusions clear. The road, lighting or surrounding buildings in a beautiful car render may not be part of the purchase.

Finally, judge the asset against your audience. If horses are central to your game, believable proportions and movement matter more than they would for distant background animals. That’s a reason to inspect an individual model closely, not to judge every asset on Fab by one example.

Getting Fab assets into your engine

After acquiring an asset, use My Library to find it again. General-purpose files can be downloaded for manual import. Unreal content uses the Fab integration or Epic Games Launcher, with actions such as Add to Project, Create Project or Install Plugin depending on the package.

The Unreal editor integration supports UE 5.3 and newer. With the plugin installed and enabled, open Window > Fab to browse and access your library. If you work in UE4, check the asset’s supported versions and use the Launcher route; the newer editor integration doesn’t extend support to an older project.

With the integration enabled, open Window > Fab to access it inside Unreal Engine.

Pay particular attention to code plugins. A scenery pack and a plugin that changes engine behavior have different maintenance needs. Fab requires publishers to submit a plugin project for each supported Unreal version. A recent listing update alone doesn’t establish support for the version you use.

Fab in Launcher also supports exports to compatible versions of Unity, Blender, Maya, 3ds Max and Cinema 4D on Windows and Mac. Choose the destination application and file format, install its export plugin when prompted, then export with the application open. Support varies by application, version and format. Files saved in an application’s own format, such as Blender’s .blend files, aren’t supported by automatic export.

For Unity, confirm the package’s rendering pipeline—the system that controls how materials and lighting appear. For manual FBX imports into Unreal, expect possible material work: Unreal’s importer supports basic materials, and some texture connections need to be made manually. A downloadable model is not necessarily a finished engine package.

There are specific workflow limits, too. Epic’s known-issues list includes unsuccessful Unity exports of Megascans plants in glTF format. If that’s your intended route, confirm a working alternative before committing.

Earlier Unreal Marketplace acquisitions remain accessible through the Launcher’s Fab Library; migrated products can also appear in Fab’s My Library. Check there before buying again. Once you have the files, try them in a separate project using your intended engine version before adding them to your main game.

Understanding Fab licenses and free assets

Fab’s Standard License allows commercial and private use, modification, and distribution of projects incorporating the assets. You can use compatible tools beyond Unreal and share assets with collaborators working on the project. You can’t simply resell the files or give them away as a standalone asset collection. Attribution isn’t required under this license.

Personal and Professional are price tiers with the same usage rights. Personal is available to buyers who haven’t exceeded $100,000 in gross commercial revenue over the preceding 12 months; above that threshold, Professional applies. Check the EULA’s calculation rules for your circumstances. “Personal” doesn’t mean you’re barred from selling your game, and crossing the threshold after a qualifying purchase doesn’t require upgrading that purchase.

Watch for Reference Only. It provides access to a referenced asset rather than its source files, so it won’t suit you if you need those files for editing in another application.

Free listings can use the Standard License or Creative Commons Attribution, commonly called CC BY. CC BY allows commercial use and adaptation, but requires appropriate credit, a license link and an indication of changes. Free tells you what you pay; the license tells you what you can do.

Check each listing’s license: free availability and permission to use an asset are separate questions.

Fab’s Limited-Time Free program currently rotates every two weeks, rather than following the old “free for the month” schedule. Claim a wanted item during its offer window and keep a record of the applicable license. There’s also free content outside these promotions. Don’t spend hours adapting a free pack that doesn’t fit simply because you claimed it.

Megascans needs a separate check. The broad free-claim promotion on Fab ended in 2024; assets properly claimed through it retain their Standard License rights. Earlier Quixel or Bridge acquisitions can carry different terms, including Unreal-only restrictions under the old free Unreal plan. Epic has granted additional Fab rights to certain legacy acquisitions, but not every old claim transfers. Check your acquisition history and entitlement before assuming cross-engine rights or buying again.

Likewise, an old Unreal Marketplace purchase generally keeps its original license. New formats added through Fab can carry the Standard License alongside it. Save the license information with your project records, especially when mixing older purchases with newer downloads.

How much can you trust a Fab listing?

Fab is a legitimate Epic Games marketplace. That answers who operates the store, but it doesn’t establish the quality or legal origin of every seller’s files. Using Epic’s purchase flow also doesn’t justify a blanket claim that every transaction or download is risk-free.

Written reviews are now available alongside star ratings. Advice describing Fab as a stars-only marketplace is outdated. Read feedback for details about the asset’s version, documentation and seller response, rather than relying on the average score. A short compliment tells you less than an explanation of how the asset behaved in a project like yours.

Seller-written FAQs and optional linked Epic Developer Community discussion threads offer other places to look for answers. They serve different purposes: an FAQ explains what the seller wants you to know, while a discussion can show questions and responses over time. Before buying a complicated system, ask one specific question that its documentation doesn’t answer.

Audience reports about Fab itself are mixed. In a June 2026 Reddit discussion, users described crashes and library-search trouble, while others reported no such problems. Those accounts justify allowing time to resolve access issues; they don’t establish a marketplace-wide failure rate.

Fab reviews submissions against technical and content requirements, but approval isn’t a guarantee of ownership rights. Be cautious with recognizable characters, brands or work that appears copied. AI-generated content isn’t universally banned: Fab requires appropriate disclosure and offers filtering. A label or filter still isn’t proof of how an asset was made.

Don’t treat a purchase as a guaranteed 14-day trial. Epic’s guidance allows refund requests for undownloaded products, subject to checking download status. For product problems, contact the publisher first, then Fab Support; a publisher can approve a refund, and you can approach Support if they decline. Keep the listing’s promises, your order details and a clear description of the problem. Downloading doesn’t make every refund impossible, but you shouldn’t budget on automatic approval.

What selling on Fab involves

Fab is worth considering if you can offer something useful and maintain it. It’s a less comfortable fit if you want to upload a tool once and stop answering questions.

Getting started involves a publisher profile, the distribution agreement, trader verification, and tax and payout setup appropriate to your region. You then prepare the files, listing details and preview media and submit the product for review. Plan time for corrections instead of promising a release date before approval.

The seller’s share is 88% of product-sales revenue. Refunds are deducted from payouts. Epic pays roughly 30 days after a month ends, once you’re owed at least $100. Smaller balances carry over, and unpaid earnings older than a year are paid regardless of the threshold. You still need to subtract your own costs to work out your profit.

The work continues after publication. Engine updates can expose bugs; documentation needs to match the current product; and buyers may need help distinguishing a product defect from an incorrect setup. Supporting several engines increases the combinations you have to check.

One seller’s retrospective covering the Unreal Marketplace and Fab transition included support and maintenance in its recorded development hours and warned that this work grows with the catalog. That’s useful planning advice, though its historical results don’t predict what a new Fab seller will earn.

Epic reported more than $24 million in creator earnings across Fab in 2025. That total shows a paying market, not typical income or a forecast for 2026. Start with one well-explained product and track sales alongside the hours you spend supporting it. Clear demonstrations and an audience you can reach yourself are worth planning alongside the listing.

When Fab makes sense for you

Choose Fab when you’ve found an asset that solves a specific problem, includes the files you need and has credible documentation for your software. Its broad selection and Unreal purchase-to-project routes are the strongest reasons to start there.

For a Unity-only project, compare the asset with an equivalent package in the Unity Asset Store, especially if the Fab listing offers only general-purpose model files. Choose the package that needs less work to fit your project, with terms and support you can accept. If you need a distinctive central character or specialist motion that available packs can’t provide, commissioning it may make more sense.

For sellers, Fab offers access to buyers and a clear revenue split, but the opportunity includes maintenance and customer service. For buyers, the final check is simpler: confirm the files, version and license before you pay. If a crucial answer is missing, choose another asset.
